                           SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 127

                                  BY EDUCATION COMMITTEE

                              A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING BARBARA MORGAN, MISSION SPECIALIST-EDUCATOR IN THE
       NASA SPACE PROGRAM.

Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:

WHEREAS, Barbara Morgan, McCall resident and teacher in the McCall-
Donnelly Elementary School, was chosen from among 11,000 teachers to partici-
pate in the Teacher in Space program in 1985; and
WHEREAS, Barbara has continued to play a leadership role in space educa-
tion with her work through NASA's Education Division; and
WHEREAS, NASA has recently announced that Barbara Morgan will become the
first mission specialist-educator to travel into space; and
WHEREAS, Barbara will now train as an astronaut and will travel into space
as a full-fledged participant in the program; and
WHEREAS, Barbara has said that teaching will always be her first priority
in the space program, and her devotion to her own students and to students
everywhere is the preeminent value in her approach to space travel; and
WHEREAS, Barbara has likened this experience to turning the pages of a
book, with a story unfolding before the young people of America and the world,
piquing their interest in space, in exploration in general, and in broaching
   new frontiers in learning.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Ses-
sion of the Fifty-fourth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Repre-
sentatives concurring therein, that we commend her character and qualifica-
tions which have led to the selection of Barbara Morgan as a mission
specialist-educator with the NASA space program. She is an example of the ded-
ication to education which is so typical of teachers and which is the special
attribute teachers bring into a successful classroom. We know that this expe-
rience will be shared with thousands of students, young and old, who still
cherish exploration and new ideas. From her view in space, high above the
world we inhabit, Barbara will undoubtedly gain new insights to share with us
all. We look forward to the day when Barbara Morgan will return to an Idaho
classroom and to students whose education will be enriched by her experiences.
Students everywhere join the Idaho Legislature in wishing Barbara Godspeed.
