                                   BY EDUCATION COMMITTEE
  1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
4 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
5 WHEREAS, Boise State University, located in Boise, Idaho, is an emerging
6 metropolitan research university of distinction, achieving its vision through
7 academic excellence, public engagement, a vibrant culture and exceptional
  8 research; and
9 WHEREAS, Boise State University reflects the character of Idaho's capital
 10    city - a center of business, government, technology, health care and the arts;
 11 and
12 WHEREAS, Boise State University is the largest university in Idaho with
13 18,876 students - an all-time state fall enrollment record for the ninth time
 14 in ten years; and
15 WHEREAS, the Boise State University football team has won the Western Ath-
16 letic Conference championship for five consecutive years; and
17 WHEREAS, the Boise State University Broncos completed their most recent
18 football season with a record of 13-0, being the only undefeated NCAA Division
19 I team in the country and a win in the New Year's Day Bowl Championship Series
20 Fiesta Bowl over the vaunted seven-time national champion Sooners of the Uni-
21 versity of Oklahoma in a classic David versus Goliath matchup; and
22 WHEREAS, Boise State University's football team has the highest percentage
23 of wins of any Division I football program in the nation since 1999 and the
24 University of Oklahoma has the second highest percentage of wins of any Divi-
25 sion I football program during that period; and
26 WHEREAS, the Boise State University Broncos finished ranked sixth in the
27 Coaches/BCS poll and fifth in the nation in the Associated Press poll while
28 receiving one first place vote; and
29 WHEREAS, Boise State University's head football coach, Chris Petersen,
30 capped off an incredible 2006 season on Thursday (January 11) when he was
31 named the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Coach of the Year. The award is part of
32 the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Football Coaching Awards which is held annually
33 to benefit the American Heart Association and honor excellence in coaching,
34 and the honor is the first individual national award ever won by a member of a
35 Boise State University football team at the NCAA Division I-A level.
36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
37 of the Fifty-ninth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and the
38 Senate concurring therein, that we extend to Boise State University and the
39 Bronco Football Team our enthusiastic congratulations on the past undefeated
40 season, which has culminated in winning the BCS Fiesta Bowl over the Univer-
41 sity of Oklahoma in perhaps the most exciting college football game ever
42 played. We commend the Broncos on their exciting style of play, gritty deter-
43 mination, dedication to the task at hand and their competitive spirit which
44 led to not only the biggest victory in school history but also a victory that
1 marks the dawn of a new era in college football by proving that teams from
2 non-Bowl Championship Series conferences can compete and win against the
3 nation's traditional football powers. We congratulate Coach Chris Petersen,
4 the first coach in America since 1900 to win thirteen games against zero
5 losses in NCAA Division I in his first year of head coaching, his coaching
6 staff, players and the president of the university, Dr. Robert Kustra.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
8 President Robert Kustra and to Coach Chris Petersen of Boise State University.
