SCR127|||| LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO |||| Fifty-fourth Legislature Second Regular Session - 1998IN THE SENATE SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 127 BY EDUCATION COMMITTEE 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING BARBARA MORGAN, MISSION SPECIALIST-EDUCATOR IN THE 3 NASA SPACE PROGRAM. 4 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 5 WHEREAS, Barbara Morgan, McCall resident and teacher in the McCall- 6 Donnelly Elementary School, was chosen from among 11,000 teachers to partici- 7 pate in the Teacher in Space program in 1985; and 8 WHEREAS, Barbara has continued to play a leadership role in space educa- 9 tion with her work through NASA's Education Division; and 10 WHEREAS, NASA has recently announced that Barbara Morgan will become the 11 first mission specialist-educator to travel into space; and 12 WHEREAS, Barbara will now train as an astronaut and will travel into space 13 as a full-fledged participant in the program; and 14 WHEREAS, Barbara has said that teaching will always be her first priority 15 in the space program, and her devotion to her own students and to students 16 everywhere is the preeminent value in her approach to space travel; and 17 WHEREAS, Barbara has likened this experience to turning the pages of a 18 book, with a story unfolding before the young people of America and the world, 19 piquing their interest in space, in exploration in general, and in broaching 20 new frontiers in learning. 21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Ses- 22 sion of the Fifty-fourth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Repre- 23 sentatives concurring therein, that we commend her character and qualifica- 24 tions which have led to the selection of Barbara Morgan as a mission 25 specialist-educator with the NASA space program. She is an example of the ded- 26 ication to education which is so typical of teachers and which is the special 27 attribute teachers bring into a successful classroom. We know that this expe- 28 rience will be shared with thousands of students, young and old, who still 29 cherish exploration and new ideas. From her view in space, high above the 30 world we inhabit, Barbara will undoubtedly gain new insights to share with us 31 all. We look forward to the day when Barbara Morgan will return to an Idaho 32 classroom and to students whose education will be enriched by her experiences. 33 Students everywhere join the Idaho Legislature in wishing Barbara Godspeed.
