STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS 10937 The purpose of this legislation is to amend Title 72 Worker s Compensation and Related Laws, Chapter 4 Benefits, Section 13, to provide compensation coverage for those workers who contract occupational diseases as follow: all infectious strains of hepatitis, and tuberculosis. Currently Section 13 provides coverage only for hepatitis B and no coverage for tuberculosis. This additional coverage will ensure that the risks to workers from on the job exposure to infected blood and body fluids are adequately recognized. FISCAL IMPACT There were three documented cases of Hepatitis C infection among the general population in 2000 and eight in 1999, with treatment costs unknown. Since these infections were among the general population, worker s compensation would be applicable to only a fraction of these cases.
