  1                               A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  2    COMMENDING STACY DRAGILA FOR HER SUPERIOR CONDUCT AND FOR HER  ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  3        AT  THE  2000  SUMMER  OLYMPICS  IN  SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA AND COMMENDING DAVE
  4        NIELSEN, HER COACH.
                                                                        
  5    Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
                                                                        
  6        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila is  a  resident  of  Pocatello,  working  toward  a
  7    Master's Degree in Health Education at Idaho State University where she gradu-
  8    ated in 1995 with a degree in physical education/health education; and
  9        WHEREAS,  Stacy  Dragila excelled as a hurdler and heptathlete during high
 10    school and first participated in pole vaulting in 1993 while  attending  Idaho
 11    State University; and
 12        WHEREAS,  Stacy  Dragila held five school and venue records at Idaho State
 13    University and still ranks in the school's top 10 in 13 outdoor events; and
 14        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila was inducted into Idaho State University's Ring  of
 15    Honor  in 1999. The Ring of Honor is designed to honor people who have brought
 16    pride and the national spotlight to the state of Idaho; and
 17        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila has consistently been a top ranked performer in the
 18    pole vault and heptathlon and owns the world indoor and  outdoor  records  for
 19    the  women's  pole  vault. Stacy Dragila captured the official world record by
 20    clearing  15 feet 2 1/4 inches at the Olympic trials in  Sacramento,  Califor-
 21    nia.  Unofficial records report Stacy Dragila clearing 15 feet 3 inches at the
 22    Pocatello  Downtown  Street  Vault  and  15 feet 5 inches at the Santa Barbara
 23    Beach Vault in July and August, 2000; and
 24        WHEREAS, on September 25, 2000, Stacy Dragila won  a  gold  medal  in  the
 25    women's pole vault at the 2000 Summer Olympics, clearing 15 feet 1 inch; and
 26        WHEREAS,  Dave  Nielsen,  Idaho  State  University's  Head Track and Field
 27    Coach, first recruited Stacy Dragila as a heptathlete for Idaho State  Univer-
 28    sity  and later introduced her to pole vaulting, encouraging her participation
 29    in the event. Dave Nielsen has continued as Stacy Dragila's mentor, coach  and
 30    friend,  inspiring  her  throughout her career and at the 2000 Summer Olympics
 31    and has been named the United States  Olympic  Committee's  "Track  and  Field
 32    Developmental  Coach  of  the Year" as well as the "Nike Elite Track and Field
 33    Coach of the Year"; and
 34        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila participates in the Big Brothers/Big  Sisters  pro-
 35    gram  and  works  as  an assistant coach with the Idaho State University track
 36    team, concentrating on the vault and heptathlon; and
 37        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila has been featured in "USA  Today,"  "Sports  Illus-
 38    trated"  and "ESPN The Magazine" and has appeared on NBC's "Today Show" and in
 39    commercials for GMC and VISA, both of which aired during the Super Bowl; and
 40        WHEREAS, Stacy Dragila has climbed to the top of her profession with exem-
 41    plary strength, focus and determination and is a positive role  model  for  us
 42    all.
 43        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
 44    of  the  Fifty-sixth  Idaho  Legislature, the House of Representatives and the

  1    Senate concurring therein,  that we recognize and honor Dave Nielsen  for  his
  2    excellence  in  coaching  and for the role he played in the Olympic victory of
  3    Stacy Dragila as well as the honor bestowed on him in being named  the  United
  4    States  Olympic  Committee's "Track and Field Developmental Coach of the Year"
  5    and the "Nike Elite Track and Field Coach of the Year."
  6        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular
  7    Session of the Fifty-sixth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and
  8    the Senate concurring therein,  that we recognize and honor Stacy Dragila  for
  9    her  superior  attitude and conduct, her medal winning performance at the 2000
 10    Summer Olympics at Sydney, Australia, and for the pride she  brings  to  Idaho
 11    and America.

                      STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

                           RS 10724C1

The purpose of this resolution is to honor Stacy Dragila and Dave 

Nielsen for their achievements and recognition they bring to 

Idaho.  Stacy is the assistant track coach at Idaho State 

University who holds the world record and won the Olympic gold 

medal in the Women's Pole Vault event.  Dave Nielsen is ISU's 

head track and field coach who recruited Stacy to ISU, taught her 

to pole vault, and coached her through the Olympic events.
