|||| LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO |||| Fifty-sixth Legislature First Regular Session - 2001IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2 BY EDUCATION COMMITTEE 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 DECLARING THE IMPORTANCE OF READING TO CHILDREN AND ENCOURAGING IDAHO PARENTS, 3 EDUCATORS AND OTHER ADULTS TO MAKE READING TO CHILDREN A PRIORITY. 4 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Idaho: 5 WHEREAS, the House of Representatives believes that achieving the goal of 6 teaching every child to read and comprehend by the end of the third grade is 7 among our state's most important priorities; and 8 WHEREAS, reading research tells us that children who can read and compre- 9 hend successfully are dramatically less likely to drop out of school or end up 10 in prison; and 11 WHEREAS, experts agree that children need to be motivated to read and that 12 the model of family and other adults reading to them sends a powerful message 13 about the importance of reading; and 14 WHEREAS, the Idaho Legislature believes that assisting the children in our 15 state to become successful adults by learning to read and comprehend at an 16 early age should be a focus of this legislative session; and 17 WHEREAS, March 2, 2001, is the 97th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Seuss, 18 the well-known author of children's books; and 19 WHEREAS, the Idaho Legislature believes there is no other more appropriate 20 day to encourage Idahoans to read to all the children in our state. 21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the House of Representa- 22 tives, assembled in the First Regular Session of the Fifty-sixth Idaho Legis- 23 lature, that Friday, March 2, 2001, shall be declared "Read Across Idaho Day"; 24 and 25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the House of Representatives, 26 by declaring March 2, 2001, as "Read Across Idaho Day", do hereby encourage 27 all parents, educators and other adults to spend a minimum of fifteen minutes 28 that day reading to a child; and 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the House of Representatives do 30 hereby encourage all adult citizens of the great state of Idaho to advance the 31 cause of education, introduce the wonders of books, and help our state's chil- 32 dren succeed by taking every opportunity, every day, to read to a child.

It is to reenforce the value of reading to the success and happiness of both children and adults.
