STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS 08550 The purpose of this legislation is to provide criminal penalties for failing to give information regarding a motor vehicle accident involving damage to a vehicle. The penalties range from misdemeanor to felony criminal penalties depending on the dollar amount of the damage. This seems to be a growing problem as people involved in motor vehicle accidents are either unwilling to give the required information or just leave the scene of an accident leaving the person whose vehicle is damaged to pick up the cost out of his or her pocket or have their surety pick up those costs. FISCAL NOTE There could be a slight fiscal impact to the general fund due to the potential (however small of increased incarceration. However, it is assumed that anyone penalized under this section initially would be paying a fine rather than be incarcerated. CONTACT: Senator Atwell Parry 208-334-4735 S1040
