STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS08977C1 The purpose of this bill is to expand the benefits received by the dependent children of peace officers and firefighters killed or disabled, as defined in the bill, in the line of duty in Idaho. This bill will bring the level of benefits on a level consistent with other benefits for dependents of POW/MIA Idahoans. The bill provides for the costs (all fees, books, room and board) of eligible dependents pursuing a vocational technical or undergraduate education at an Idaho public college or university. FISCAL NOTE It is difficult to estimate the number of peace officer or firefighter dependents that might eventually be eligible for benefits under this legislation. Since the original legislation was enacted, only three dependents have used the benefit. It currently costs approximately $7,200 annually to attend an Idaho public four-year institution ($2,200 in fees, $1,000 for books and $4,000 for room and board). The costs are generally less for community colleges. With this amendment to the legislation, if one dependent was eligible each year to receive benefits under this legislation, the annual cost to the state would be $7,200.
