                           SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 134

 1                               A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 2    RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF A NATIVE SON OF THE STATE OF IDAHO, LEONARD
 3        JAMES ARRINGTON, AND JOINING WITH HIS MANY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES EXPRESS-
 4        ING OUR SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND OUR APPRECIATION FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBU-
 5        TIONS.

 6    Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:

 7        WHEREAS, Leonard James  Arrington,  recognized  as  the  Dean  of  Western
 8    Historians,  died  Thursday, February 11, 1999, at his home in Salt Lake City,
 9    Utah; and
10        WHEREAS, Dr. Arrington was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, on July 2, 1917, the
11    third of Noah and Edna Arrington's eleven children; and
12        WHEREAS, he was a graduate of the University of Idaho in 1939, a Phi  Beta
13    Kappa majoring in agricultural economics; and
14        WHEREAS, following further education in economics and history, and service
15    in  World  War II, Leonard Arrington began a classroom teaching career at Utah
16    State University where he taught for twenty-six years  and  profoundly  influ-
17    enced the education of thousands of students; and
18        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Arrington was appointed to the position of Church Historian
19    by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and during  his  tenure  he
20    encouraged  research opportunities in western and church history and began the
21    first studies of Mormon Women's History; and
22        WHEREAS, as reported  in  the  obituary  in  the  "New  York  Times,"  Dr.
23    Arrington  was  the author of twenty-one books on American, Western and Mormon
24    history and published hundreds of articles in professional journals.  Many  of
25    these  works  involved  Idaho.  As  a Fulbright professor at the University of
26    Genoa, Italy, he wrote "Introduzione Alla Storia Economica Degli Stati Uniti,"
27    published in Genoa in 1959. For publisher Alfred Knopf Co., in 1985, he  wrote
28    the  definitive  biography of "Brigham Young: American Moses." Many historians
29    believe his Ph.D. dissertation in economics, published by the Harvard  Univer-
30    sity  Press  as  "Great  Basin  Kingdom: An Economic History of the Latter-day
31    Saints, 1830-1900," to be the single best history of the Great Basin region in
32    the nineteenth century. Every week for twenty-eight years, until his death, he
33    wrote a letter to his children; and
34        WHEREAS,  in  1990,  the  Idaho  Legislature  commissioned  Leonard  James
35    Arrington to compile a bicentennial history of his native state which he  com-
36    pleted  with  distinction in his two-volume book, "History of Idaho" published
37    by the Idaho State Historical Society and the University of Idaho Press; and
38        WHEREAS, Leonard James Arrington was respected as a fine historian with an
39    inquiring mind, as a genuine individual  with  a  unique  ability  to  inspire
40    others, and as a friend and colleague by many.
41        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
42    of  the Fifty-fifth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representa-
43    tives concurring therein, that the Legislature recognizes the  accomplishments
44    of  a native son of the state of Idaho, Leonard James Arrington, and join with

 1    his many friends and colleagues in expressing our sympathy to his  family  and
 2    our appreciation for his many contributions.
 3        BE  IT  FURTHER  RESOLVED  that the Secretary of the Senate be, and she is
 4    hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of  this  resolution  to  the
 5    family  of  Leonard James Arrington, his wife Harriet Horne Arrington, and his
 6    children James, Carl and Susan.
