                                HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL NO. 1

                                BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

 1                                   A JOINT MEMORIAL
 2    TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED  STATES  IN  CONGRESS
 3        ASSEMBLED,  AND  TO THE CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION REPRESENTING THE STATE OF
 4        IDAHO IN THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES.

 5        We, your Memorialists, the House of Representatives and the Senate of  the
 6    State of Idaho assembled in the First Regular Session of the Fifty-fifth Idaho
 7    Legislature, do hereby respectfully represent that:

 8        WHEREAS,  Idaho  is the only state in the nation without either a national
 9    veterans cemetery or a state veterans cemetery; and
10        WHEREAS, the majority of  the  states  without  a  national  cemetery  are
11    located in the Northwest; and
12        WHEREAS,  only  one of the six states bordering Idaho has a national ceme-
13    tery; and
14        WHEREAS, Idaho is centrally located for a regional cemetery in the  North-
15    west; and
16        WHEREAS,  it is fitting and proper that a grateful nation should provide a
17    burial site within a reasonable distance from the homes of those Idahoans  and
18    others  residing in the northwestern states who honorably served their country
19    in a time of emergency.
20        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
21    of the Fifty-fifth Idaho Legislature, the House  of  Representatives  and  the
22    Senate  concurring  therein, that we respectfully and urgently request members
23    of Idaho's congressional delegation to support funding for a national veterans
24    cemetery in Idaho to serve veterans in the northwestern states.
25        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the  House  of  Representa-
26    tives  be, and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this
27    Memorial to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Repre-
28    sentatives of Congress, and  the  congressional  delegation  representing  the
29    State of Idaho in the Congress of the United States.

                         STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

 The purpose of this joint memorial is to encourage members of the
 United States Senate and House of Representatives to support the
 construction, maintenance, and operation of a national veterans|
 cemetery in Idaho to serve veterans residing in the northwestern
 states, and to support the members of Idaho's congressional
 delegation in their efforts to secure funding for this cemetery.
