SCR137|||| LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO |||| Fifty-fifth Legislature First Regular Session - 1999IN THE SENATE SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 137 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF A NATIVE SON OF THE STATE OF IDAHO, JOHN H. 3 BRANDT, AND JOINING WITH HIS MANY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES IN EXPRESSING OUR 4 SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND OUR APPRECIATION FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS. 5 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 6 WHEREAS, John H. Brandt of Nampa, noted civic leader, philanthropist, and 7 realtor died on Friday, February 26, 1999, at a Nampa hospital; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt was born in Nampa on April 7, 1904, the eldest of 9 Herman and Grace Brandt's seven children; and 10 WHEREAS, he graduated magna cum laude from the College of Idaho in 1926 11 and, in 1932 the College of Idaho awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Law; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt maintained a lifelong interest in education and was a 13 teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in Midvale and Cambridge, served 14 on the Nampa Board of Trustees and was president of the Idaho School Trustees 15 Association; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt founded the Brandt Agency real estate firm in 1936, 17 and remained active in the real estate business well into his 90s, serving as 18 president of the Idaho Association of Realtors, chairman of the Idaho Real 19 Estate Commission and director of the National Association of Realtors in the 20 course of his long career; and 21 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt was also a longtime director of Provident Federal Sav- 22 ings and Loan and served as vice president and manager of the Nampa office; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt developed numerous farms from sagebrush to productive 25 row cropland in southwestern Idaho and Nevada and derived great pleasure in 26 "making the land bloom"; and 27 WHEREAS, when the original plans for the Interstate called for a bypass of 28 Nampa, he was instrumental in conceiving the present route of the Interstate 29 and convincing the appropriate governmental agencies of the wisdom of this 30 course of action; and 31 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt was active in a broad spectrum of community affairs. 32 He became a member of the Lions Club in 1937, and while president, organized 33 the development of Lincoln (Lions) Park. He received a life membership in the 34 Lions and was named a Lions International Melvin Jones Fellow. He received the 35 Rotary Club Award for Community Service, an honorary lifetime membership in 36 the Nampa Chamber of Commerce, and the Robert W. Wood Award for voluntary ser- 37 vice for the economic development of the City of Nampa. He also served as 38 president and a director of the Nampa Industrial Commission, was a member of 39 the Snake River Stampede Board, introduced Junior Achievement to Canyon County 40 and served on its board for many years. He was appointed to the President's 41 Advisory Committee of Northwest Nazarene College and received the Emerson 42 Award for Community Service. Mr. Brandt was also appointed to the Governor's 43 Blue Ribbon Water Committee and the Endowment Fund Investment Board; and 44 WHEREAS, Mr. Brandt was well-known for his philanthropy. Brandt Auditorium 2 1 was named for him and his wife in recognition of their donations to the build- 2 ing of the Nampa Civic Center and the John H. & Orah I. Brandt Fine Arts Cen- 3 ter at Northwest Nazarene College also honors the Brandt's generosity. In 4 keeping with his love of learning and giving spirit, Mr. Brandt established 5 the Brandt Free Enterprise Chair Endowment Trust at Albertson College; and 6 WHEREAS, his diverse interests included rock hounding, creating jewelry 7 and other objects of art, and singing with the Nampa Barbershop Chorus; and 8 WHEREAS, John Brandt was greatly loved and respected for his leadership 9 and his devotion to his family, friends, church and community. 10 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session 11 of the Fifty-fifth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representa- 12 tives concurring therein, that the Legislature recognizes the accomplishments 13 of a native son of the state of Idaho, John H. Brandt, and join with his many 14 friends and colleagues in expressing our sympathy to his family and our appre- 15 ciation for his many contributions. 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate be, and she is 17 hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the 18 family of John H. Brandt and his children, Joan, Don and Marilyn.
