                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 40

  1                               A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  2    TO RUBY SAMUELSON, WIFE OF FORMER GOVERNOR  DON  W.  SAMUELSON,  HIS  SON  AND
  3        DAUGHTER AND FAMILY MEMBERS.
                                                                        
  4    Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
                                                                        
  5        WHEREAS, Don W. Samuelson, a former Idaho Governor and State Senator, died
  6    on January 20, 2000; and
  7        WHEREAS,  Don Samuelson served in the Idaho State Senate in 1960, 1962 and
  8    1964, including service on the Finance Committee and chairmanship of the  Pub-
  9    lic Resources and Public Recreation Committee; and
 10        WHEREAS,  although  not a native of Idaho, Don Samuelson became a resident
 11    by choice after locating in Sandpoint, Idaho, following his discharge from the
 12    U. S. Navy; and
 13        WHEREAS, an astute businessman, Don Samuelson operated  the  Pend  Oreille
 14    Sport Shop and later the Don Samuelson Equipment Company, participating in two
 15    major  Idaho economic interests, recreation activities and the mining and log-
 16    ging industry; and
 17        WHEREAS, as Governor of the State of Idaho, Don Samuelson  was  recognized
 18    for  his sincerity, his rugged individualism, and his unwavering commitment to
 19    fiscal conservatism; and
 20        WHEREAS, in his personal memoir, "His Hand On My Shoulder: A Life Story of
 21    Hunting, Fishing, Love and Politics," Samuelson wrote that "I had the distinct
 22    feeling that the good Lord was with me and guiding me throughout  my  campaign
 23    for Governor and the four years that I served in that position."; and
 24        WHEREAS,  we  salute  this  fine  man and dedicated public servant for his
 25    unyielding faith and belief that honesty, integrity, high morals  and  decency
 26    are  life's  valuable  assets  and for his perseverance in these values in his
 27    personal and political life; and
 28        WHEREAS, Don Samuelson is survived by his wife, Ruby, whose service at his
 29    side as the First Lady of Idaho was exemplary and greatly revered, a  son  and
 30    daughter, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
 31        WHEREAS,  it is appropriate that the Legislature of the State of Idaho, on
 32    behalf of the citizens of this state which Don Samuelson loved and served with
 33    distinction, recognize and memorialize this statesman and express our sympathy
 34    to his family.
 35        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second  Regular  Ses-
 36    sion  of  the  Fifty-fifth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and
 37    the Senate concurring therein, that we extend our sympathy to  the  family  of
 38    former  Governor  Don  W. Samuelson at the loss of this stalwart Idaho citizen
 39    whose devotion to public service we commend and recognize.
 40        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives  be,
 41    and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this Resolution
 42    to  Ruby Samuelson, wife of Don W. Samuelson with our deepest feelings of love
 43    and warmest best wishes.

    The purpose of this House Concurrent Resolution is to extend sympathy to the
    wife and family of former Governor Don W. Samuelson, who passed away on
