S1300|||| LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO |||| Fifty-fifth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2000IN THE SENATE SENATE BILL NO. 1300 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 1 AN ACT 2 RELATING TO SETTING THE UNITED STATES FLAG AND STATE FLAG AT HALF-MAST; AMEND- 3 ING CHAPTER 8, TITLE 67, IDAHO CODE, BY THE ADDITION OF A NEW SECTION 4 67-818, IDAHO CODE, TO PROVIDE THAT FLAGS AT STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT 5 BUILDINGS SHALL BE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST FOR DEATHS IN THE LINE OF DUTY FOR 6 POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS, PARAMEDICS, EMTS OR RESCUE PERSONNEL; AND DECLARING 7 AN EMERGENCY. 8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 9 SECTION 1. That Chapter 8, Title 67, Idaho Code, be, and the same is 10 hereby amended by the addition thereto of a NEW SECTION, to be known and des- 11 ignated as Section 67-818, Idaho Code, and to read as follows: 12 67-818. FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-MAST -- DEATH IN LINE OF DUTY FOR POLICE, 13 FIREFIGHTERS, PARAMEDICS, EMTS, RESCUE PERSONNEL. (1) The governor, upon 14 timely notification and verification of the death of a federal, state or local 15 law enforcement officer or firefighter who either works in Idaho or is a resi- 16 dent of Idaho and who died in the line of duty, shall direct that the flag of 17 the United States and the state flag be flown at half-mast for one (1) week at 18 the state capitol building and at other state and local government buildings. 19 The flags shall be flown upon an existing flagstaff or flagstaffs or, at the 20 option of the governor, a flagstaff or flagstaffs erected at an appropriate 21 site, after consultation with organizations representing law enforcement offi- 22 cers and firefighters regarding the location and design of the flagstaff or 23 flagstaffs. The flags flown in honor of the deceased law enforcement officer 24 or firefighter shall be presented to the family of that officer or firefight- 25 er. 26 (2) The governor, upon timely notification and verification of the death 27 of a paramedic or emergency medical technician or rescue personnel rendering 28 services in a county or city of this state or paramedic or emergency medical 29 technician who either works in Idaho or is a resident of Idaho and who died in 30 the line of duty while rendering first aid, ambulance rescue, emergency medi- 31 cal service or rescue services shall direct that the flag of the United States 32 and the state flag be flown at half-mast for one (1) week at the state capitol 33 building and at other state and local government buildings. The flags shall be 34 flown upon an existing flagstaff or flagstaffs or, at the option of the gover- 35 nor, a flagstaff or flagstaffs erected at an appropriate site, after consulta- 36 tion with organizations representing paramedic, emergency medical technicians 37 or rescue squad personnel regarding the location and design of the flagstaff 38 or flagstaffs. 39 The flags flown in honor of the deceased paramedic, emergency medical 40 technician or rescue personnel shall be presented to the family of that para- 41 medic, emergency medical technician or rescue personnel. 42 SECTION 2. An emergency existing therefor, which emergency is hereby 2 1 declared to exist, this act shall be in full force and effect on and after its 2 passage and approval.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS09484CI Relating to the setting of the United States flag and the State flag of Idaho at half-mast to honor deaths in the line of duty for police, fire fighters, paramedics, EXTs or reserve personnel who reside or work in the state of Idaho. The greatest gift given to public safety is in the loss of ones life in protecting or assisting others. This high tribute by the state of Idaho reflects the thank you from the public.
