]]]] LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO ]]]] Fifty-seventh Legislature Second Regular Session - 2004IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 54 BY EDUCATION COMMITTEE 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 STATING LEGISLATIVE FINDINGS AND COMMENDING THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S IDAHO 3 NATIONAL ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY FOR ITS FIFTY-FIVE YEARS 4 OF SERVICE TO IDAHO AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. 5 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 6 WHEREAS, fifty-five years ago, the fledgling Atomic Energy Commission 7 selected a site in Idaho over twenty other potential locations across the 8 nation to become the home of the country's one and only National Reactor Test- 9 ing Station; and 10 WHEREAS, Idaho's National Reactor Testing Station played a key role in 11 carrying out President Eisenhower's landmark Atoms for Peace Initiative by 12 generating the world's first usable amounts of electricity from nuclear power, 13 giving Arco, Idaho, the distinction of being the first American city to be 14 powered by nuclear-generated electricity, and designing and building a total 15 of fifty-two, mostly first of their kind, nuclear reactors; and 16 WHEREAS, Idaho's national laboratory has served so nobly in enhancing our 17 national defense through the development of United States naval nuclear pro- 18 pulsion systems, the training of U.S. Navy nuclear personnel and the develop- 19 ment and manufacture of protective armor packages and numerous other 20 technologies to enhance the safety and efficiency of U.S. military forces; and 21 WHEREAS, scientists and engineers at Idaho's national laboratory have 22 labored tirelessly to advance Idaho and national interests with their contri- 23 butions in alternative and renewable energy systems, neutron capture therapy, 24 subsurface science, biotechnology and many other areas as befits a 25 multiprogram national laboratory; and 26 WHEREAS, Idaho's national laboratory has become a key and respected part- 27 ner with state government, regional universities and industry in advancing 28 Idaho's Science and Technology Strategic Plan and helping secure Idaho's place 29 in the knowledge-based economy of the twenty-first century; and 30 WHEREAS, the Idaho Legislature and the people of the state of Idaho fully 31 appreciate the tremendous scientific and economic asset the Idaho National 32 Engineering and Environmental Laboratory is to Idaho. 33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Ses- 34 sion of the Fifty-seventh Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and 35 the Senate concurring therein, that we recognize and commend the Idaho 36 National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory in this, the fifty-fifth 37 year of its service to America and express our support for this Idaho-based 38 national asset so that it can continue its contributions to national science 39 and technology excellence for many years to come.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS 14185 The purpose of this resolution is to commend the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory for its 55 years of service to Idaho and to the United States of America.
