2 RELATING TO CERTIFICATION OF TEACHERS; AMENDING SECTION 33-1201, IDAHO CODE,
3 TO ADOPT REQUIREMENTS FOR SUPERVISED TEACHING EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO CERTIFI-
4 CATION IN IDAHO AND TO MAKE TECHNICAL CORRECTIONS.
5 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
6 SECTION 1. That Section 33-1201, Idaho Code, be, and the same is hereby
7 amended to read as follows:
8 33-1201. CERTIFICATE REQUIRED. (1) Every person who is employed to serve
9 in any elementary or secondary school in the capacity of teacher, supervisor,
10 administrator, education specialist, school nurse or school librarian shall be
11 required to have and to hold a certificate issued under authority of the state
12 board of education, valid for the service being rendered; except that the
13 state board of education may authorize endorsement for use in Idaho, for not
14 more than five (5) years, certificates valid in other states when the qualifi-
15 cations therefor are not lower than those required for an Idaho certificate.
16 No certificate shall be required of a student attending any teacher-
17 training institution, who shall serve as a practice teacher in a classroom
18 under the supervision of a certificated teacher, and who is jointly assigned
19 by such teacher-training institution and the governing board of a district or
20 a public institution to perform practice teaching in a non-salaried
21 nonsalaried status. Those students attending a teacher-training institution of
22 another state and who serve as a non-salaried nonsalaried practice teacher in
23 an Idaho school district shall be registered by that school district.
24 A student, while serving in a practicum, internship or student teaching
25 position under the supervision of a person certificated pursuant to this sec-
26 tion, shall be accorded the same liability insurance coverage by the school
27 district being served as that accorded such certificated person in the same
28 district, and shall comply with all rules and regulations of the school dis-
29 trict or public institution while serving in such a capacity.
30 (2) Prior to issuing a certificate to an applicant from a computer-based
31 alternative route to Idaho teacher certification, a person shall have com-
32 pleted a supervised teaching experience or internship equivalent to one (1)
33 semester according to rules promulgated by the state board of education.

The purpose of this bill is to require a semester or equivalent
of supervised classroom experience for individuals who are
seeking a teaching certificate through a computer based
alternative program.
