]]]] LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO ]]]] Fifty-eighth Legislature First Regular Session - 2005IN THE SENATE SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL NO. 108 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 1 A JOINT MEMORIAL 2 TO THE FAMILY OF MORLEY NELSON RECOGNIZING HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND 3 EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE OCCASION OF HIS DEATH. 4 We, your Memorialists, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 5 State of Idaho assembled in the First Regular Session of the Fifty-eighth 6 Idaho Legislature, do hereby respectfully represent that: 7 WHEREAS, Morley Nelson was born on a ranch in North Dakota in 1916 and 8 died on February 21, 2005, in Boise, Idaho; and 9 WHEREAS, Morley often recounted the experience when he saw his first fal- 10 con plummet from the sky and strike a duck his horse had flushed which began a 11 lifelong fascination with raptors; and 12 WHEREAS, Morley served in World War II in the 10th Mountain Division of 13 ski troopers and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Silver 14 Star; and 15 WHEREAS, Morley was instrumental in the enactment of a 1958 law in Idaho 16 which protected birds of prey and the eventual enactment of federal law pro- 17 tecting birds of prey; and 18 WHEREAS, in a career which spanned 50 years, Morley Nelson's contributions 19 to preserving raptors was nothing short of staggering, including personally 20 raising and rehabilitating dozens of birds, working with Idaho Power to design 21 safer power lines to prevent the deaths of thousands of birds by electrocu- 22 tion, lecturing, demonstrating and educating tirelessly, working to establish 23 the Snake River Birds of Prey Natural Area and assure its realization, 24 recruiting The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey to Boise, work- 25 ing on more than 30 films about raptors, including Disney films with wide pub- 26 lic appeal; and 27 WHEREAS, Morley was widely recognized for his strength of character, 28 boundless physical stamina and inexhaustible work ethic, contagious passion 29 for the birds of prey he championed to great effect, integrity and individual- 30 ity which set him apart from others, and zest for nature and the domain of 31 raptors; and 32 WHEREAS, Morley Nelson was a very genuine and loving human being, husband 33 and father, friend and colleague to all; and 34 WHEREAS, it is appropriate and fitting that the Idaho Legislature 35 memorialize a man who was singular, unique and special in ways which cannot be 36 captured in words, but which will not be forgotten in the legacy of the 37 raptors he cherished. 38 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session 39 of the Fifty-eighth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representa- 40 tives concurring therein, that we recognize the great works and accomplish- 41 ments of Morley Nelson and the changes he forged in the way people will think 42 of eagles and hawks forevermore. We extend our sincere condolences to his fam- 43 ily, while knowing that his memory will not fade, as he has carved for himself 44 a special place in history. 2 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate be, and she is 2 hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this Memorial to the fam- 3 ily of Morley Nelson.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS 15091 The purpose of this memorial is to recognize the outstanding, staggering accomplishments, and the man himself, Morlan "Morley" Nelson for his work and devotion to the Birds of Prey throughout the world. In recognition of the recruitment and establishment of the Snake River Birds of Prey Natural Area in Boise and in bringing The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey to Idaho. Morley Nelson brought the State of Idaho, with his contributions to preserving raptors to the attention of tourists from all over the world. He gained the respect and friendship of Kings, Presidents, Congress and Business. His films, some with Disney, others with entertainers such as Paul Neuman and John Denver taught the world to respect and protect these magnificent birds. He should be recognized for his honesty, his inexhaustible energy, his boundless stamina, and his contagious passion for educating the world to birds of prey. His legacy and love for the birds is instilled in the hearts of everyone who knew him. He was truly, "A Man for All Seasons". Morley Nelson has a special place in history and will not be forgotten.
