congratulating the University of Idaho and all those individuals who have
worked to make the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival a success, and for their

]]]] LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO ]]]] Fifty-ninth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2008IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 36 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 STATING FINDINGS OF THE LEGISLATURE AND CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO 3 AND ALL THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE WORKED TO MAKE THE LIONEL HAMPTON JAZZ 4 FESTIVAL A SUCCESS ON THEIR FINE EFFORTS THAT HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE 5 2007 NATIONAL MEDAL OF ARTS AWARD AND ENCOURAGING THEIR CONTINUED EFFORTS. 6 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 7 WHEREAS, for over forty years, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has 8 brightened and enlightened the University of Idaho campus and Idaho; and 9 WHEREAS, on November 15, 2007, President George Bush bestowed the nation's 10 most prestigious arts award, the National Medal of Arts, on the University of 11 Idaho in recognition of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival; and 12 WHEREAS, Governor C. L. "Butch" Otter responded to the presentation of the 13 National Medal of Arts award to the University of Idaho by stating, "The 14 priceless legacy of music and learning embodied in the Lionel Hampton Interna- 15 tional Jazz Festival is a treasure not just for the University of Idaho, but 16 for our entire state and indeed all lovers of the arts, everywhere. Recogni- 17 tion and acclaim that come with the National Medal of the Arts is well earned, 18 greatly deserved and a reason for all Idahoans to celebrate"; and 19 WHEREAS, in addition to the annual presence of Lionel Hampton, in the past 20 the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has featured such internationally acclaimed 21 performers as Doc Severinsen, The Four Freshmen, Bobby McFerrin and Sarah 22 Vaughn; and 23 WHEREAS, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is much more than a showcase for 24 the most accomplished musicians. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival celebrates 25 four days of music with events that not only include the evening concerts, but 26 also the Young Artists Concerts, the Jazz in the Schools program and Artist 27 Workshops for students and other jazz lovers; and 28 WHEREAS, although Lionel Hampton left us on August 31, 2002, the Lionel 29 Hampton Jazz Festival has continued under the directorship of Dr. Lynn 30 Skinner, and now, with Dr. Skinner's recent retirement, under Artistic Direc- 31 tor John Clayton, a six-time Grammy-nominated bassist, composer, arranger and 32 conductor, and Executive Director Cami McClure; 33 WHEREAS, the 2008 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, to be held February 20 34 through 23 on the University of Idaho campus, will present a star-studded eve- 35 ning concert schedule, including such renowned artists as violinist Aaron 36 Weinstein; the All-Star Rhythm Section, featuring Jeff Hamilton on drums, 37 Russell Malone on guitar, Robert Hurst on bass and Bill Charlap on piano, per- 38 forming with Atsuko Hashimoto on Hammond B3 organ, Tia Fuller on saxophone and 39 Grace Kelly on saxophone; "Lionel, Red and Bunny," featuring Ed Polcer, 40 Wycliffe Gordon and Houston Person; the legendary Dr. John; violinist Regina 41 Carter; vocalist Roberta Gambarini; Roy Hargrove's RH Factor; Hank Jones with 42 Gerald Clayton and Taylor Eigsti; Bobby Hutcherson with Warren Wolf on vibes; 43 Dee Daniels with vocalist Sara Gazarek; Curtis Fuller with Ryan Porter; and 44 Jon Hendricks with vocalist Sachal Vasandani; and 2 1 WHEREAS, the 2008 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will celebrate the 100th 2 birthday of the late Lionel Hampton. 3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Ses- 4 sion of the Fifty-ninth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and 5 the Senate concurring therein, that the Legislature congratulates the Univer- 6 sity of Idaho and all those individuals who have worked to make the Lionel 7 Hampton Jazz Festival a success on their fine efforts that have been recog- 8 nized by the 2007 National Medal of Arts award and encourages their continued 9 efforts.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
RS 17592
This Concurrent Resolution congratulates the University of Idaho and
all those individuals who have worked to make the Lionel Hampton Jazz
Festival a success on their fine efforts that have been recognized by
the 2007 National Medal of Arts Award and encouraging their continued
efforts.
FISCAL NOTE
There will be no fiscal impact on the General Fund.
