HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL NO. 3

1 A JOINT MEMORIAL
2 TO THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC
3 COMMITTEE, THE VANCOUVER 2010 BID CORPORATION, THE PRIME MINISTER OF CAN-
4 ADA AND THE PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.
5 We, your Memorialists, the House of Representatives and the Senate of the
6 State of Idaho assembled in the First Regular Session of the Fifty-seventh
7 Idaho Legislature, do hereby respectfully represent that:
8 WHEREAS, the state of Idaho has a close cultural, economic and intergov-
9 ernmental relationship with the Canadian province of British Columbia; and
10 WHEREAS, this close relationship has developed as the result of a common
11 border, similar economies, and complementary recreation and tourism indus-
12 tries; and
13 WHEREAS, British Columbia and the state of Idaho are both members of the
14 Pacific Northwest economic region representing the tenth largest economy in
15 the world; and
16 WHEREAS, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, generated
17 over one billion dollars in revenue and spending in the entire western region;
18 and
19 WHEREAS, the state of Idaho's participation with other states in the 2002
20 Winter Olympic Games was extremely successful; and
21 WHEREAS, the region has legacy facilities from world class winter recre-
22 ation which include the Sun Valley Resort and Whistler/Blackcomb, which are
23 considered to be among the top ten ski resorts in North America; and
24 WHEREAS, the Pacific Northwest economic region as a whole, and particu-
25 larly tourism and emerging industries and small businesses, will benefit from
26 an estimated six billion dollars' worth of worldwide media attention; and
27 WHEREAS, such benefits accrue for over ten years on a continuing basis
28 from increased tourism.
29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
30 of the Fifty-seventh Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and the
31 Senate concurring therein, that the state of Idaho respectfully communicates
32 its support for backing the Vancouver 2010 Olympic bid.
33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the House of Representa-
34 tives be, and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this
35 Memorial to the International Olympic Organizing Committee, the United States
36 Olympic Committee, the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation, the Prime Minister of
37 Canada and the Premier of British Columbia.

the Vancouver, British Columbia, 2010 Olympic bid.
