The Division of Building Safety is located in the Department of Self-Governing Agencies. It performs most of the activities of the former Department of Labor & Industrial Services, which was dismantled by the 1996 Legislature. It is comprised of two programs: Administration and Building Safety. Ninety-eight percent of its funding comes from dedicated or other funds. The remainder comes from a small federal grant. The Division of Building Safety receives no General Fund money. Two enhancements were funded. The first provides $279,500 for the Plumbing Bureau to hire 3 plumbing inspectors and 2 clerical specialists. The second provides the Electrical Bureau with $99,200 to hire 3 electrical license inspectors. This appropriation also limits the department's number of full-time positions for FY 2000.
