 1                                        AN ACT
 2    RELATING TO THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOARD OF TRUSTEES;  AMENDING  SECTION
 3        67-4124,  IDAHO  CODE,  TO PROVIDE FOR TERMS OF FOUR YEARS, TO LIMIT BOARD
 4        MEMBERS TO NOT MORE THAN TWO CONSECUTIVE TERMS, TO DELETE CONSIDERATION OF
 5        POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE  BOARD  AND  TO  DELETE
 6        OBSOLETE LANGUAGE.

 7    Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:

 8        SECTION  1.  That  Section 67-4124, Idaho Code, be, and the same is hereby
 9    amended to read as follows:

10        67-4124.  BOARD OF TRUSTEES -- QUALIFICATIONS, APPOINTMENT  AND  TERMS  OF
11    MEMBERS.  The  board  of  trustees  shall  consist  of seven (7) members to be
12    appointed by the state board of education. The members of the board  shall  be
13    chosen with due regard to their knowledge, competence, experience and interest
14    in    the  fields related to the preservation  and interpreta-
15    tion  of  the    historical  archives      historic  and
16    prehistoric  cultural  heritage   of Idaho. The state board of education
17    shall consider geographic  representation  and  population  distribution  when
18    selecting board members. All appointees shall be chosen solely on the basis of
19    their  qualifications  ,  and not more than four (4) members of the board
20    shall belong to the same political party .
21        All members of the board of trustees shall serve for a specific term. Upon
22    expiration of the terms of members serving on the  board  of  trustees  ,
23      on the effective date of this act,  the board shall appoint
24     one (1) member for a term of two (2) years, two (2)  members for a
25    term  of four (4) years , and two (2) members for a term of six (6) years
26    . Appointments thereafter, except appointments for the unexpired portion
27    of a term, shall be for a term of  six   four  (  6
28      4 ) years.  No member may serve more than two (2) con-
29    secutive terms.

                          STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

    The purpose of this legislation is to amend existing law relating 
    to appointment of members of the board of trustees of the 
    historical society by the state board of education by clarifying 
    the anticipated background of appointees, the responsibilities of 
    the board of trustees and setting terms served by appointees.
