FALSE IDENTITY INFORMATION - Amends existing law to provide that a person
is guilty of a misdemeanor if he knowingly gives or causes to be given
false information regarding his or another's identity to any law
enforcement officer investigating the commission of an offense.

                                    HOUSE BILL NO. 688

                            BY REVENUE AND TAXATION COMMITTEE

 1                                        AN ACT
 2    RELATING TO PROVIDING FALSE INFORMATION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS;  AMENDING
 3        SECTION  18-5413, IDAHO CODE, TO PROVIDE THAT A PERSON IS GUILTY OF A MIS-
 4        DEMEANOR IF HE KNOWINGLY GIVES OR CAUSES TO  BE  GIVEN  FALSE  INFORMATION
 5        REGARDING  HIS OR ANOTHER'S IDENTITY TO ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER INVES-
 6        TIGATING THE COMMISSION OF AN OFFENSE.

 7    Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:

 8        SECTION 1.  That Section 18-5413, Idaho Code, be, and the same  is  hereby
 9    amended to read as follows:

10        18-5413.  PROVIDING FALSE INFORMATION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, GOVERN-
11    MENT AGENCIES, OR SPECIFIED PROFESSIONALS.  (1)  A person is guilty
12    of a misdemeanor if he knowingly gives or causes to be given false information
13    to  any  law enforcement officer, any state or local government agency or per-
14    sonnel, or to any person licensed in this state to practice social work,  psy-
15    chology  or  counseling, concerning the commission of an offense, knowing that
16    the offense did not occur or knowing that he has no  information  relating  to
17    the offense or danger.
18          (2)  A  person  is guilty of a misdemeanor if he knowingly gives or
19    causes to be given false information regarding his or  another's  identity  to
20    any law enforcement officer investigating the commission of an offense.

    This proposal makes it illegal for a witness or other person to lie to a police officer regarding his/her 
    identity or the identity of another person involved in an investigation of a crime.
