Fifty-fifth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2000
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
HOUSE BILL NO. 494
BY TRANSPORTATION AND DEFENSE COMMITTEE
1 AN ACT
2 RELATING TO THE DESIGNATION OF THE I.B. PERRINE BRIDGE; AMENDING CHAPTER 5,
3 TITLE 40, IDAHO CODE, BY THE ADDITION OF A NEW SECTION 40-513A, IDAHO
4 CODE, TO DESIGNATE THE BRIDGE SPANNING THE SNAKE RIVER ON U.S. HIGHWAY 93
5 SOUTH OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 84 NEAR TWIN FALLS, IDAHO, AS THE I.B. PERRINE
6 BRIDGE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
8 SECTION 1. That Chapter 5, Title 40, Idaho Code, be, and the same is
9 hereby amended by the addition thereto of a NEW SECTION, to be known and des-
10 ignated as Section 40-513A, Idaho Code, and to read as follows:
11 40-513A. DESIGNATION OF THE I.B. PERRINE BRIDGE. The bridge spanning the
12 Snake River Canyon on U.S. Highway 93 south of Interstate Highway 84 near the
13 city of Twin Falls, Idaho, shall be designated as the "I.B. Perrine Bridge" to
14 honor I.B. Perrine for his part as founder and father of the Twin Falls area.
15 His dream for agriculture and his efforts to bring water to the valley set in
16 motion the development we see today. The transportation department shall erect
17 suitable signs so designating the bridge as the "I.B. Perrine Bridge."
18 SECTION 2. This act shall be in full force and effect on and after July
19 1, 2000.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
RS09411
Of the 1721 bridges on the state highway system, only a few are of such magnificent structure or
historical significance to warrant a name to recognize an event or person playing an important
part in Idaho's history.
The Perrine bridge, as it is locally known meets the criteria for structural significance and
historical significance. The original bridge, spanning the canyon at this same location was known
as the "I.B. Perrine" bridge. The present replacement bridge, begun in 1973, spanning 1,500 feet
from rim to rim and 480 feet above the Snake River has a number (#17580) but no name. People
in Jerome County and Twin Falls County call the bridge "Perrine" for the principal founder of
the area. The bridge should be memorialized as the "I.B. Perinne Bridge."
FISCAL NOTE
Negligible, except for the costs to erect, two(2)signs at either end. Estimated to be less than $500.
