                            SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 105

  1                               A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  2    STATING FINDINGS OF THE LEGISLATURE AND ESTABLISHING A PROCESS FOR IDENTIFICA-
  3        TION AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO REPLACE PLACE NAMES  IN  THE  STATE  OF  IDAHO
  4        WHICH INCLUDE THE WORD "SQUAW."
                                                                        
  5    Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho:
                                                                        
  6        WHEREAS,  the word "squaw" is offensive and hurtful to Native Americans as
  7    a derogatory name for Native American women; and
  8        WHEREAS, the state of Idaho encourages tolerance and understanding between
  9    non-indian citizens and Indian tribal members; and
 10        WHEREAS, it is inappropriate for geographical  place  names  in  Idaho  to
 11    include this word; and
 12        WHEREAS,  it  is  appropriate  for  the state legislature to take steps to
 13    achieve the goal of the eventual renaming of all geographical place  names  in
 14    the state of Idaho to eliminate the use of this word.
 15        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the First Regular Session
 16    of  the Fifty-sixth Idaho Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representa-
 17    tives concurring therein, that the State Department of  Lands  and  the  Idaho
 18    Human  Rights Commission, in cooperation with representatives of Idaho Tribes,
 19    establish a committee to identify all geographic names in the state  of  Idaho
 20    containing the word "squaw" and develop a plan to replace these names within a
 21    reasonable time, with other appropriate names. The committee should report its
 22    findings  and  recommendations  to the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and
 23    the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Second Regular  Session  of
 24    the Fifty-sixth Idaho Legislature.

                       STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

                             RS 10777



This resolution establishes a process by which all place names in
the State of Idaho containing the word "squaw" be identified and
a plan developed for the renaming of such places. The plan to be
presented to the 2002 session of the Idaho Legislature. It
provides for the establishment of a committee including state and
tribal representatives to conduct the planning process.





                           FISCAL IMPACT



The costs associated with this project are minor and can be
absorbed by current appropriations.
