]]]] LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO ]]]] Fifty-ninth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2008IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34 BY STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 STATING FINDINGS OF THE LEGISLATURE AND EXTENDING A HOSPITABLE WELCOME TO PAR- 3 TICIPATING ATHLETES AND ALL GUESTS WHO COME TO VISIT THE GREAT STATE OF 4 IDAHO DURING THE 2009 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD WINTER GAMES, ENCOURAGING 5 CITIZENS TO VOLUNTEER FOR POSITIONS REQUIRED TO HOST THE GAMES, SUPPORTING 6 THE 2009 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD WINTER GAMES PROGRAM AND THE SUSTAINING 7 INFLUENCE IT HAS UPON INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AND 8 CONGRATULATING AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO THE GAMES ORGANIZING COMMIT- 9 TEE OF THE 2009 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD WINTER GAMES AND OTHER SPECIAL 10 OLYMPICS OFFICIALS WHO HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO ORGANIZE A SUCCESSFUL 11 2009 WORLDWIDE SPORTING EVENT IN THE STATE OF IDAHO. 12 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Idaho: 13 WHEREAS, after a successful bid for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter 14 Games endorsed by state leaders including then-Governor Dirk Kempthorne, Sena- 15 tor Larry Craig, Senator Michael Crapo, Representative Mike Simpson, then- 16 Representative C.L. "Butch" Otter, and Boise Mayor David Bieter, the host site 17 was awarded to Boise, Idaho, for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games 18 to be held February 6 through 13, 2009; 19 WHEREAS, previous Special Olympics sites have included such noted cities 20 as Nagano, Japan and Shanghai, China, hosting the 2009 Special Olympics World 21 Winter Games is a privilege afforded the citizens of Idaho and provides an 22 opportunity to showcase the beauties and potential of this great state to the 23 rest of the world; and 24 WHEREAS, more than 3,000 athletes from 85 countries and regions of the 25 world are expected to compete in seven Olympic-type winter sports events; and 26 WHEREAS, volunteerism is the backbone of the Special Olympics and over 27 6,000 volunteers will be given the opportunity to serve Idaho through filling 28 needed hosting and event assignments; and 29 WHEREAS, the participation of world-class athletes with intellectual dis- 30 abilities provides a venue for global discussions and action on the positive 31 influence the Special Olympics can make on the lives of people with disabili- 32 ties; and 33 WHEREAS, the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will be the largest 34 multi-sport event ever held in the state of Idaho. 35 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Ses- 36 sion of the Fifty-ninth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and 37 the Senate concurring therein, that a hospitable welcome be extended to par- 38 ticipating athletes and all guests who come to visit the great state of Idaho 39 during the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. 40 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature and Serve Idaho, the Gover- 41 nor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism, encourage citizens to volunteer 42 for positions required to host the games. 43 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature supports the 2009 Special 44 Olympics World Winter Games program and the sustaining influence it has upon 2 1 individuals with intellectual disabilities. 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature congratulates and expresses 3 appreciation to the Games Organizing Committee of the 2009 Special Olympics 4 World Winter Games and other Special Olympics officials who have worked 5 tirelessly to organize a successful 2009 worldwide sporting event in the state 6 of Idaho.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE RS 17538C1 The entire world will focus on Idaho on February 6 through 13, 2009, when the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will be hosted by Boise, Idaho. This Concurrent Resolution will establish the awareness among legislators and the public that this world-wide event will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in the State of Idaho. It is the intent of this Concurrent Resolution to encourage support of the legislature, promote volunteerism of the public, and extend congratulations to the Games Organizing Committee for successfully bringing such a notable event to Idaho!
